Eken H9 Plus camera firmware update

Got an Eken H8 Plus recently. https://goo.gl/DFeQbM from Aliexpress. The firmware is factory STD 20170223. I noticed that prices of Eken cameras on Banggood can be very good when using a coupon EKEN20% . The chipset is Ambarella A12 and the sensor is Sonyy IMX117.

Two additional "eken style" rounded edge PG1050 batteries (total 3) and a charger kit are good add on for $8 USD more. I can use these batteries in other action cameras too. I've used video modes 1080p60fps |*| (gyro ON), 2.5k, and 4k (without gyro) for several hours total, and everything works fine. No freezes or problems. Photo mode works too but makes only 12MP size photos in 4:3 aspect ratio so it's is basically useless. I'd rather get a capture of a video frame. For SD cards, a good quality UHS-I U1 card will be fine for up to 2.5k, but will not work for 4k. So, a good U3 card capable of handling 60 Mbps/s is necessary for 4k. I found a Toshiba Exceria 32GB U3 card for $16 USD on Aliexpress, and I found a Lexar 633x 32GB U3 card also for $16 USD on Ebay. *EDIT* Samsung EVO Plus 64GB U3 is on Aliexpress for $22 to $26 and it works good.

If some of your video files are really noisy or are missing/skipping footage, then formatting the SD CARD as FAT32 (but not exFAT) in your computer using "guiformat" tool may fix the issue. Well, 4k looks a little too fuzzy and twinkly/noisy for me, so I'll mostly use 2.5k (1440p) and lower modes. Yeah, 2.5k while holding the cam steadily is nice, but the there is only 2.5k 60fps and this frame-rate is fake because the frames are doubled. The 1080p60fps {♦} gyro ON mode seems to be best, the 60fps is real and it is really nice! Exposure +0.3 or more sometimes helps with lighting, but too bad there is not any White Balance / Color / Sharpness controls.

*EDIT* - see UPDATES below in comments.

I wonder if a firmware upgrade to a newer WEB file will do any good... (?) *EDIT* Answer: NO. The 20170301 firmware did nothing noticeable. I would really like to have {♦} 2560x1440 (gyro ON) mode.

schnurbi - freeze? no. i have WEB 20170301 firmware.
well, it hasn't frozen yet ... so i could guess that there is a chance that it may freeze when I put it inside the waterproof case (with sealed back plate) and record 2.5k or 4k for more than 20 minutes. but I haven't tried that exact scenario. I usually use {○} 1080p60fps (gyro EIS on), in a bracket or inside the case with a slotted back plate. And only if 2.5k had gyro EIS then I would use that most often.

UPDATE - I'm using Powerdirector and its built-in audio denoise filter at around factor 10 to remove the constant ringing / buzzing noise (see comment #19.1) present in all audio.

            image link - http://i.imgur.com/BFNV0fa.jpg

test video. ( increase the volume to maximum and listen carefully )

            .
Someday later... I will try to use free video software Openshot http://openshot.org or Shotcut http://shotcut.org to edit video AND remove ringing noise from audio.

*UPDATE I tried Low Pass filter for audio in Shotcut 18.01.2 (64bit) and it works okay but not as good as a real 'audio denoise' filter.

            *UPDATE
4k30fps will not work with a Toshiba Exceria (white / red color) U3 64gb card, formatted either as exFAT or FAT32. The recording always stops after 1 minute.

This is peculiar because this video mode works fine with the same brand and type but smaller card at 32gb....as already stated above

            *UPDATE
A 64gb Samsung EVO Plus U3 works great for 4k mode (at ~60 Mbps). No freezes or stops (usually).

            *UPDATE
the camera sometimes stops recording when the 64gb Samsung EVO Plus U3 is formatted exFAT inside the camera, especially when using 4k mode. So I use "guiformat" tool and formatted the card FAT32 with 64kb allocation unit, and the camera records fine.

            *UPDATE
I recorded exploding firecrackers in 1080p 120fps mode. here are the youtube video and a clip of the original unprocessed recording

            https://yadi.sk/i/bLDpYkys3Sy9jz

            *UPDATE
the camera can continuously record for long periods of time (1 hour or more) without any problem in 4k mode when using 64gb Samsung EVO Plus U3 and it is formatted to FAT32 with 32k allocation unit (cluster) size. *But 64kb allocation unit size might cause a problem sometimes. I use "guiformat" tool for that.

more video samples from my Eken H8 Plus are here - https://yadi.sk/d/3x4bi14F3Hopaj

and here is the guiformat tool - http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.htm

i'm trying to access the rtsp video stream of a finicky camera again... but this time it is my Eken H8 Plus camera. But of course Eken or Ambarella have to make this complicated and I reckon they will not let us simply use VLC media player to get a video stream from rtsp://192.168.42.1:554/live (or similar URL address) !

The big question -- How can we send the right messages to the camera to authenticate and activate RTSP stream, for example by using "curl" or "telnet" tool, and then play the stream ?

I made and ran a "ambainfo.sh" script to get device info within the Linux environment of the camera (via telnet) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/hx7jydmpb2...cript.zip?dl=0 and here is output text from that script - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/.../info.txt?dl=0

There is a binary /usr/bin/AmbaRTSPServer and it appears to run at power on boot up but for some reason I think it does not continue running after a few minutes... So, it should run again when you activate wifi and connect by the Ez-iCam app.

these are TCP / UDP ports and their status and their service name I found when I ran 'netstat -a' inside a telnet session by wifi to the camera, just after power on boot up.
          Code:
          tcp 9888 cyborg-systems LISTEN
tcp 7878 opswise message service LISTEN
          tcp 554 rtsp LISTEN
          tcp 111 sunrpc LISTEN
tcp 8787 msgsvr (message server) LISTEN
          tcp 53 domain LISTEN
          tcp 23 telnet LISTEN

          udp 53 domain
          udp 67 bootps
          udp 111 sunrpc
          udp 7877 (UNKNOWN)
          udp 1010 surf
this port number search helped - http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-number/

To get some more info, I also used tcpdump http://www.androidtcpdump.com and Ez-icam app on a rooted Android phone while connected to the camera, and I used Wireshark https://www.wireshark.org on a windows-pc. Here is the pcap packet capture file. We can load that file into Wireshark and see some things.

Additional ports from the tcpdump capture (but maybe I missed some):
          Code:
          udp 6970 rtp
          udp 6971 rtsp
There is a lot of chatter over tcp 7878, tcp 8787, and udp 6970 and udp 6971 just before rtsp is really started.

Can anyone else look at the chatter in the pcap file in wireshark and tell us what it means?

Here is rtsp info... after the chatter is done:
          Code:

gfhmon - thanks. i'll investigate this topic again when I have time. but an Eken H9 has different firmware and different SoC processor than H8 Plus, so we may need to tweak your method a bit for cams with Ambarella a12.

Does the H9 firmware have two images (two OS's) like the H8 Plus firmware does?

Falsificator did a first mod on this FW.
It will disable sharpening, noise reduction and CA reduction.
I my tests it will not change bitrates yet.

schnurbi - thanks. but why would a person want to disable sharpening / noise reduction / CA reduction (?) / ?
it seems to be too much "turning off" features that can make the image look good. or correct me if I'm wrong somewhere...

by the way, what is CA reduction ? - maybe "chromatic aberration" reduction ?

            you are correct about CA.
Well, in camera sharpening can be worse than sharpening of different softwares.
also if you add a very sharp lens you might not need it at all. stock lens is pretty soft.
I think the best thing would be:
            - noise reduction: only chromatic NR, no Luma NR
            - CA correction: ON
            - Flat color profile (not sure if this is possible)
            - sharpening off (you can always do it later)

Hello and thanks for the support of our cameras.
I newly bought an Eken H9 PLUS camera, looks genuine but I have a big problem.Lot of times it FREEZES with a black screen and it only responds to a long time press of the power button or battery removal. It does this WITH or WITHOUT my sd which is a Sdhc uhs-1 class 10 (also genuine). There is no firmware update in order to see it this fixes.Do you have something in mind?
            Thanks in advance.

              unfortunate!
              is the camera from Banggood?
be sure to use a high quality UHS-1 U3 card or faster. (but not U1, and not class 10)
and update to the latest firmware if possible http://ftp.eken.com/H9Plus_EKHK_STD_...3_20161215.rar but make sure it's compatible before trying it.

otherwise, I suggest you open dispute with the seller. and demand a refund or replacement.

when I got my Eken H8 Plus several months ago, the stock STD firmware was 2017 February, 23rd, and the 5 minute clip was the max setting.

so I think that is normal for some Eken cameras.

            I have H8PLUS EKHK 161215

it's never locked up, and performed faultlessly
I use Genuine SanDisk Extreme U3

The latest recovery version Ron has is 170301

Big problem is Eken don't release change logs AND - at least with the other cams ranges, change the number each month/batch, without changing the firmware
People then think there's an update

They are also lazy (software engineers)
Sometimes the WEB_. release is not the same firmware
(Contains differences). .... ie: 1 H9R EK XXXX has remote on / off
But the WEB_XXXX (same number) has this missing

There's been firmware versions where the words don't even fit the screen (petty - but unprofessional)
            Ssid is still iCam
            4:3 pics
            No adjustments other than EV

A user is trying to make a 3D rig, has multiple H9R and gets different pics of the same shot
Maybe different lens or different cropping by firmware ...?
He has different models .... eg: EKR, MKR etc due to finances- couldn't buy them in 1 hit

Make sure you use the same as you have now
                ie: HK or TH

ONLY use V1 or V2 if you already have those numbers
